Irritation after toy use is common and usually traceable to one of five causes. Working out which one is a process of elimination rather than guesswork.
The usual culprits are, in order of frequency: lubricant sensitivity, soap or detergent residue left on the toy, a porous material that has trapped bacteria, insufficient lubricant causing friction, and latex sensitivity from a condom. Change one variable at a time – starting with a plain water-based lubricant and a thorough rinse of the toy.
1. Lubricant sensitivity
This is the most common cause and the easiest to test. Two ingredients trigger most reactions:
- Glycerin – a sugar alcohol used as a humectant. It can also feed yeast.
- Propylene glycol – a common carrier that some people find irritating.
Warming, tingling and flavoured lubricants are the highest-risk category because they add menthol, capsaicin or fragrance on top.
Test: switch to a plain water-based lubricant with a short ingredient list for two weeks. If symptoms clear, reintroduce the old product once. If they return, you have your answer.

2. Soap and detergent residue
Fragranced soap, shower gel and laundry detergent all leave residue that stays on a toy surface – particularly on slightly tacky TPE.
- Wash toys with unscented, mild soap or a dedicated toy cleaner.
- Rinse longer than feels necessary.
- Wash the towel you dry the toy with separately, without fabric softener.
Matching symptoms to causes
| Cause | Typical timing | What it feels like | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lubricant sensitivity | During or minutes after | Burning, tingling, redness | Switch to plain water-based lube |
| Soap residue | Minutes to hours after | Itching, dryness | Rinse toy, switch to unscented soap |
| Porous material build-up | Next day | Itching, odour | Replace the toy; do not try to deep-clean |
| Friction | During use | Soreness, rawness | More lubricant, slower pace |
| Latex sensitivity | Minutes after | Itching, swelling | Latex-free condoms |
| Infection | 1-5 days, worsening | Discharge, odour, pain | See a clinician |
3. Porous materials
TPE and jelly toys absorb moisture into the surface. Over months, that surface can hold bacteria and breakdown products, and washing cannot reach them.
Signs a toy is the problem:
- it develops a smell that survives cleaning;
- irritation appears only with that one toy;
- the surface has gone tacky and is hard to keep dry.
The fix is replacement, not a stronger cleaner. Silicone is the long-term answer.

4. Friction
Insufficient lubricant causes micro-abrasions that feel like general soreness rather than sharp pain. Water-based lubricant needs reapplying every 10-15 minutes, and more than you think during the first few minutes.
5. Latex and condoms
If you use a condom on a toy – which is a sensible step for shared or porous toys – latex sensitivity can present as itching and swelling within minutes. Latex-free condoms (polyurethane or polyisoprene) remove this variable entirely.

How to run the elimination
- Change one thing. Start with a plain water-based lubricant.
- Wait two weeks of normal use before judging.
- Reintroduce one variable if symptoms have cleared.
- Log it. Timing, product and symptom severity tells you more than memory.
If two rounds of elimination do not identify the cause, or symptoms persist for more than a week, see a clinician.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I itch after using a sex toy?
Most commonly lubricant sensitivity (glycerin and propylene glycol), soap residue on the toy, a porous material holding bacteria, friction from insufficient lubricant, or latex sensitivity.
How do I test whether lube is the problem?
Stop using that lubricant for two weeks and switch to a plain water-based formula without glycerin, fragrance or warming agents. If irritation clears and returns when the original product is reintroduced, lubricant is the likely cause.
Could it be an infection rather than irritation?
Irritation usually settles within 24-72 hours after removing the cause. Persistent discharge, strong odour, pain, fever or symptoms that worsen are reasons to see a clinician.
