Moving a Heavy Doll: Safe Handling and Transport

Owning a large doll means occasionally moving it: to clean the space, to store it, or to relocate. Doing it correctly protects both your back and the doll.

Support the torso and hips together; lifting by a limb puts stress on the material.

Before you lift

Plan the route first. Clear the path, decide where the doll will land, and have the support (a case, a blanket, a dolly) ready before you pick it up. Lifting “just for a second” while you look for somewhere to put it is how both backs and dolls get hurt.

Support, don’t squeeze

Cradle the torso from underneath and support the weight across your forearms rather than gripping the limbs or neck. Gripping concentrates pressure and can leave marks or stress the joints. Our torso range lists weights so you can plan a lift you can actually manage.

Transporting across a room

  • Hold close to your body to reduce leverage on your back.
  • Move slowly and turn with your feet, not your waist.
  • Set it down on a padded surface, not a hard edge.

Transporting further

For a move or travel, use a padded case or wrap the doll in a soft blanket and secure it so it cannot shift. Protect the face, hands and any delicate areas with extra padding. If you are packing for a journey, see our guide on travelling with your doll.

Long-distance shipping

If you must ship a doll, use a rigid box with foam and label it fragile. Never ship it loose in soft packaging; movement in transit is what damages finishes and joints.

A rule of thumb

If the lift feels awkward, stop and get help or a dolly. A two-person move or a wheeled support costs nothing compared to an injury or a torn seam.

Frequently asked questions

How do I lift a heavy doll without hurting my back?

Cradle the torso from underneath, keep it close to your body, and lift with your legs. Never grip limbs or the neck, and get help or a dolly if it feels awkward.

Can one person move a full-size doll?

Many full-size dolls can be moved by one person for short distances, but a wheeled support or a second set of hands is safer over longer distances.

How should I pack a doll for transport?

Use a rigid box or padded case with foam, protect the face and hands, and secure everything so it cannot shift in transit.
